Academic Services
School Counselors provide guidance services to assist students with course selection, career awareness, academic success and personal enrichment. It is important for your students to work closely with their counselor to ensure that they are on track for high school graduation and postsecondary success.

Sabrina A. Cardona (A - Garay)

It is my pleasure to have the opportunity to share my years of experience with and learn from the Somerset ISD community. I have been in education for 25 years; 5 as a special education math teacher, 6 as an elementary counselor and 14 as a high school counselor. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology (1997) and a Master of Science degree in School Counseling (2006) at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, TX. I spent 20 years at United ISD in Laredo before moving to San Antonio to be closer to family. I am excited and look forward to working with all the students, families, staff and community members of Somerset to make the best year possible!
Theresa Fisher (Garcia - Mota)

My name is Theresa Fisher and I am honored to join the Somerset school community. With 41 years of experience in education, I've had the privilege of walking alongside students, families, and educators through nearly every stage of learning and growth. Each year has reinforced my deep belief in the power of connection, support, and listening. Throughout my career, I've worked with students from diverse backgrounds, helping them navigate academic challenges, personal development, social-emotional needs, and future planning. My goal is always the same: to help every student feel seen, heard, and valued. I'm excited to bring my passion, experience, and heart to this community -- and even more excited to learn from all of you. I look forward to building relationships, fostering trust, and supporting our shared mission of helping every student thrive. "Counselors help students embrace their uniqueness, celebrate their strengths, and pursue their dreams."
Paola Elizondo (Moua - Z)

I have been in the education field for 18 years, 16 of those years before coming here were at Edgewood ISD. I was a Dual Language teacher for 8 years and then I earned my Masters in School Counseling. I believe that if you are in this career it's because you truly want to be here. It is not an easy career, but if you are passionate for what you do in the education field, then everyday is worth it. I love working with the students and I love seeing them problem-solve and succeed! I am a mother of 2 young boys and that's definitely another full time job after work! I am here to serve parents and students. Please contact me if you need anything.
Melanie Thompson
(College & Career Advisor)

I joined Somerset ISD in 2007 as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher and have served students in a variety of college and career readiness roles, including GEAR UP Coordinator. With nearly two decades of experience in education, I am passionate about helping students discover opportunities and confidently prepare for life after high school.
As College & Career Advisor, I work alongside students, families, counselors, teachers, administrators, and community partners to support college, career, and workforce readiness. I help students navigate college admissions, scholarships, financial aid, College Board programs, TSI & SAT preparation, dual credit opportunities, and postsecondary planning while also serving as a bridge between district initiatives and campus support programs.
As a parent, educator, and Somerset community member, I believe every student deserves an advocate and a trusted source of information as they explore their future. I am excited to support Somerset ISD students and families as they discover pathways that lead to success beyond graduation.
