Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Somerset ISD, the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our highest priority. We are writing to inform you about an incident that occurred on the Somerset Elementary campus today.
Around 12:45 p.m., Somerset ISD Police became aware that a student was in possession of a firearm on campus. School officials and law enforcement acted immediately to secure the individual and confiscate the weapon from the student’s backpack. At no time were any direct threats made, and no students or staff members were harmed.
The student involved is no longer on campus, and the incident is under investigation with Somerset ISD Police. Somerset ISD maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding weapons on campus. In alignment with Texas Education Code 37.007 and district policy, bringing a prohibited weapon onto a school campus results in severe disciplinary action.
We want to commend the students who reported this information. This is a vital reminder of the importance of See Something, Say Something, which aligns with our anonymous reporting system. We encourage you to speak with your child tonight about the seriousness of bringing prohibited items to school and the crucial role they play in keeping our school safe.
Counseling services will also be available for any students who may need support. We remain committed to providing a safe, supportive learning environment for our students and staff.
