Dedication ceremony

On August 18th, two families and an entire athletics department gathered to memorialize two legendary coaches. Somerset ISD football Coach Sonny Detmer passed on September 22, 2020 and then the next day Somerset ISD powerlifting Coach Marvin Allen passed. The two left a profound impact on Somerset ISD’s students, coaches, athletic programs, and the community as a whole.

The Somerset ISD school board approved the naming of the Somerset Junior High Sports Complex to be named now the Sonny Detmer Athletic Complex. The district hosted a dedication ceremony outside the complex.

“By caring for kids Coach Detmer has made an everlasting impact on many lives,” said Dr. José H. Moreno, Superintendent of Schools. “It is honor for us to be here an dedicate this facility to Sonny Detmer.”

Coach Detmer is one of Texas’s all-time winningest head football coaches. He coached football at several school districts and spent nearly 20 years coaching at Somerset ISD. The Detmer family has been a South Texas football institution for decades.

“I want say thank you. This sports complex means a lot to me because Sonny was not just about football he encouraged his athletes to play all sports,” said Betty Detmer, Sonny’s wife. “He blessed us and we are just so thankful for the life that God has given us and thank you for your support and your love.”

The board of trustees also dedicated the weight room in the high school gym to Coach Allen. The same crowd made their way from Somerset Junior High to Somerset High School to celebrate the naming outside the facility.

“Coach Allen’s legacy continues,” said Tim Segura, Somerset ISD Board President. “His dedication and loyalty to his students is what helped make our athletic program what it is today.”

Marvin Allen coached thousands of students, produced state powerlifting champions, and developed the foundation of powerlifting excellence in Somerset. The facility is now named the Marvin Allen Weight Facility.

“This means a lot, my dad was tough, he expected greatness, and pushed you it didn’t matter who you were he was going to make you better,” said Coach Matt Allen. “I’m honored I get to work where he did and work with the people he did.”
