Teachers receiving caterpillar condos

Braustin Homes Underwrites Educational Opportunity for Somerset ISD Students

Kinder and second graders in Somerset ISD will observe caterpillars transforming into beautiful Monarch butterflies as part of Caterpillar Condos for Classrooms. The month-long program will provide a hands-on connection to nature as students learn about this important pollinator and its cultural significance. It’s part of Braustin Butterflies, a partnership between Braustin Homes, Blooming with Birdie and Somerset ISD.

More than 40 teachers received program training on September 23rd at the Wittie Musuem thanks to Braustin Homes. Educators took home their own caterpillar condos. Teachers were also provided with a mesh cage/condo, milkweed, two monarch caterpillars and lesson plans. Ashley Bird, founder of Blooming with Birdie, shared real-world applications and hands-on Montessori-inspired activities.

“Braustin Homes supports the communities where our dealerships are located, including resources and support for teachers and schools,” said Alberto Piña, CEO, Braustin Homes which has a hybrid mobile home dealership in Atascosa, near Somerset ISD. “Caterpillar Condos is a fun, real-world activity that gets kids excited about their environment and learning about the outdoors.”

The Monarch migration across the continent is invaluable and essential for many ecosystems to thrive. But the butterfly is also a cultural icon and its migration to Mexico is symbolic.

“I’m extremely excited about this opportunity,” said Teresita Ybarra, Early Childhood Elementary Educator at Somerset ISD. “I remember when I learned about the metamorphosis process when I was a child, and I’m thrilled my students will have the same opportunity. The activities we’ll participate in will increase their vocabulary skills, allow them to witness nature in action, and hopefully inspire them to explore the outdoors.”

“My goal is that after four weeks, students leave with a deeper connection to nature,” said Ashely Bird, founder of Blooming with Birdie.  “Butterfly Condos uses this beautiful and enchanting insect to build a relationship and connection to nature. Students connect with the world outside themselves.”
