Somerset Culinary

CTE Spotlight

Somerset’s Culinary Arts teaches food preparation, safety, and much more. The pathway through Culinary Arts is filled with time in the kitchen and classroom study. Students start with the basics of safety and sanitation during the student’s freshman year. Our students can earn St. Phillips college credit, along with a Food Handler's permit, and Food Managers certification.

“In our industry you don't just have to be in the back cooking,” said Chef Eric Dromgoole.

“You can be a food buyer, up front as house management, general manager, food stylist, or a food editor there are so many possibilities.”

Students have the chance to facilitate events, from picking the menu, ordering the food and supplies, to planning out delivery.

“I'm a visual learner and I get a lot of hands-on experience in Culinary Arts,” says Enrique De Los Santos, SHS Senior. “After high school I will continue on to culinary school.”

Enrique’s culinary journey began at home watching his parents cook.

“My parents are my inspiration,” explained De Los Santos. “Seeing the attention to detail my parents put into our food, making sure it was good for us.”

While safety and sanitation come first the students also learn teamwork, organization, and a sense of community.

“Culinary has helped me maintain order in my life and the kitchen,” said Nathaly Lopez, SHS Senior. “I plan on working in the cafeteria here at Somerset ISD, while going to college for my bachelor's degree in food services.”

Interested SHS freshmen can discuss taking culinary courses with their counselors.
