Welding class

CTE Spotlight

Somerset ISD’s Advanced Welding Class is part of SkillsUSA, a group of school districts from across the region that compete against each other.

“A group of three are given an example and have to come up with a plan and manufacture a replica with their own hands,” said Hector Marines, Somerset High School Welding Instructor. “Not every kid wants to be an athlete, in cheer, or in band, Bulldog Welding gives them the opportunity to learn how to work as a team and grow.”

The training and certifications earned in Advanced Welding can lead to; college hours/credits, trade school, and entry into the workforce. The certifications are recognized by the American Welding Society and Canadian Welding Bureau.

“I feel like welding is one of the best classes you can get into,” said Oved Lerma, Somerset High School Senior. “There are so many opportunities with welding not only for business but also for personal life. For example, if you want to have a fence built, you can make it yourself without having to hire someone.”

After meeting with Mr. Marines and Mr. Gutierrez you can speak to your High School counselor for information about joining.
