EMT Class

How can I help my community? How can I help people? How can I help myself?

The EMT CTE program can help answer those questions. Somerset High School students begin  freshman year with Principles of Law/EMT and end with the Senior class EMT Practicum courses. Students have the opportunity to receive their EMT-B and BSL (Basic Life Support) certifications. With these certifications students can land a job directly out of high school and be able to work in an ambulance, a hospital, and or a clinic.

EMT Academy students save on average $1500 on books and certification with Somerset ISD.

“I’m saving time and money by getting my certification while I'm still in school,” said Arwen Garza-Muniz, Somerset High School Senior. “I plan on using my certifications while going to college to become an ophthalmologist.”

“Students can do so many things with an EMT certification. Income right out of high school can be $35,000 to $45,000 a year for EMS in general,” said EMT Instructor, Ms. Jamie Hernandez.  “They can work 48 hour shifts, Saturdays and Sundays, as they continue their education.”

“After graduation, I will continue my schooling to become an RN and SWAT Medic,” said Alessandra Mota, Somerset High School Senior. “I like helping people and I want to be a good role model for my siblings so they can be helpful to people in the community.”

From last year's class there are now five Somerset graduates active in the EMT field.

Students should meet with their Somerset High School Counselors to begin their path to the EMT Academy.
