On June 20, 2025, Governor Greg Abbott signed into law a ban on the use of personal communication devices by students, to include cell phones, during instructional day.
The purpose of the law is to promote focused learning environments, limit cyberbullying, and social media misuse during school hours.
In response to this mandate, Somerset ISD will implement a policy that complies with this new law, but also keeps our students’ well-being and family connections in mind.
What families need to know:
The use of personal communication devices are not permitted in all areas of the campus during the instructional day, this includes cafeterias, hallways and restrooms. The instructional day begins when the student arrives at school to the last bell, and includes all scheduled class periods, including lunch.
During the school day, personal communication devices are required to be stored in their backpacks on silent and/or turned off. (Not to be stored in pockets.)
Please speak with your children about the new policy before the new school year starts.
